The Legacy Begins
In Atlanta, the story of the Black barbershop is inseparable from the story of Alonzo Herndon. Born into poverty and once enslaved, Herndon built his first business behind a barber chair in Atlanta. With skill, pride, and vision, he transformed that chair into a launchpad for one of the most successful Black-owned insurance companies in the nation. His journey—from barber to entrepreneur—made him one of the wealthiest Black men in America, and a lasting symbol of what could be built when community, craft, and courage come together.
The Tradition Continues
At The SWAG Shop, we stand in that lineage. Like Herndon and Merrick, we see the barbershop not only as a space for looking your best, but as a hub of innovation and pride. It was in our chairs that the idea for SWAG Shop Grooming Products was born—products designed to carry forward the tradition of self-care, confidence, and creativity, crafted for a new generation.
